The mission of the Wawasee Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is to teach young people sailing and seamanship in a safe, fun and structured environment that promotes sportsmanship, self-discipline, self-reliance, and a respect for nature and fellow boaters. The goal is to develop in each child an appreciation fora, and a love of, sailing; and confidence in his or her abilities.
The program is open to all children between the ages of 8 and 15.
The instructional staff includes experienced junior sailing instructors, associate instructors, plus WYC volunteers. Jeff Herdrich returns as the lead instructor.
The three levels of Instruction include:
Beginner Classes: Recommended for children ages 8-10 with little or no sailing experience. Students must be comfortable around water and able to pass a swim test while wearing a life preserver. Boat type: Opti
Intermediate Classes: Recommended for children ages 10-13 who have learned the basice of sailing and are ready to sail by themselves. Typical intermediates have completed two previous eginner sessions. Boat type: Opti & O-pen Bic.
Advanced Class: Advanced group will sail O-pen Bics, plus multi-crew boats. Curriculum will include racing fundamental and advanced boat-handling. Class is appropriate for youth who have completed beginner and intermediate level sessions.
