5/13/2011

Driving past Pete's Fabulous Fish of Syracuse, South Huntington Street (SR 13), or even pulling into the parking lot one can't tell anything happened. But the business will be closed for an unknown period of time.

Fire, heat and smoke extensively damaged the popular eatery on the south edge of Syracuse early this morning. With the exception of a portion of the roof and small area near the kitchen, all damage was contained to inside the building.

The cause is undetermined and still being investigated. No dollar amount has been estimated but is believed to be exceeding $500,000.

Fire damaged buildingFIRE CLOSES BUSINESS — Pete's Fabulous Fish of Syracuse, South Huntington Street, will be closed for an undetermined amount of time, following a fire which broke out early this morning (Wednesday). The fire was contained to the roof area of the building, but the interior sustained extensive heat and smoke damage. The cause has not been determined and is being investigated by the county's fire investigation team and insurance company.

Mickey Scott, chief of Turkey Creek Fire Territorys fire department, said a passing motorist reported smoke to the county communication center. A Syracuse police officer went to investigate and had the fire department notified at 2:36 a.m.

Scott reported when he reached the hill on Bowser Road the south wind was moving heavy smoke toward the village and downtown area. Smoke was billowing from the eves of the building.

There were reports of small explosions. Scott believes these were caused by the pressurized fountain drink containers.

Ladder 11, the departments ladder truck, was utilized to ventilate the roof on the south side of the building where the fire had broken through. Inside, firefighters found extensive smoke and heat.
The fire was officially brought under control by 3:30 a.m. but firefighters remained at the scene until approximately 7:30 this morning.

No one was in the business at the time of the fire and no firefighter was injured. The last individual had left the business Tuesday evening at 9 p.m.

Kosciusko Countys fire investigation team, Squad 70, has been at the scene. Officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been notified due to the facility once having an alcohol permit.

Turkey Creek Fire Territory was assisted with manpower and a tanker by North Webster Fire Department and Milford Fire Department provided tanker assistance. Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross also assisted at the scene.
