CRUZIN' LOVES it when we hit the jackpot with an oldie but goodie. That's what happened with the question about the Wawasee Belle. First, Chris Xanders Trame let me know it was a boat on Lake Wawasee in the 1960s in her memory. She had a horror story about being on the top of the boat in a wool band uniform playing for an event.
Then Susan Fosbrink West sent in this, "Maybe you already have learned the name of the boat in the background of Garry Ringler's latest photo, but somehow the name 'Wawasee Belle' cropped into my mind. Maybe so, maybe not!"
Rich Landrigan, Syracuse High School Class of 1966 emailed, "I love your section in The Mail-Journal and look forward to reading it every week. I noticed your old picture of the front lawn at Oakwood. Our family stayed at Oakwood in the early '50s when they had screened in porches there. Anyway, the paddle boat in the picture was the Wawasee Belle that took parties around the lake much like the Lilly Pad II does today. |
