Good ice and good weather for Winter Carnival
1/19/2011

Race is on

RACE IS ON - Two snowmobilers race for the finish at the snowmobile drags on Syracuse Lake.

The Winter Carnival in Syracuse was hailed by all as successful this year, with the soup supper taking place Friday and the Wawasee Kiwanis Snowmobile Drags Saturday.

The soup contest featured 14 entries from individuals, restaurants and businesses, with the winner being voted on by the community members who attended the soup supper.

The overall winner of the contest was Ed Leamon of Leamon Electric with his seafood chowder, Nemos Surprise. Beth Kroes from Edward Jones was the business winner with her ham and bean soup and Grill n Grate was the restaurant winner with its Famous Chili. Anne Richey, who was the individual winner last year with her corn chowder with sausage, took home the individual award again this year for her chicken noodle soup.

After being discontinued for several years, the snowmobile drags were brought back to the Winter Carnival in 2009 and this year there were more than 50 snowmobiles entered in the races, with many signed up to compete in more than one class. The snowmobiles are classified based on the stud type used in the rubber tracks of the snowmobile.

According to Greg Long, a Wawasee Kiwanis member and one of the event organizers, with the weather in the high 20s, although a little windy, there was good spectator turnout and good, hard ice for the snowmobile races. There was about 7 to 8 inches of good ice when it was tested before the races Saturday morning.
